Workshop Description
After decades of research, mental health professionals are finally coming to better understand the neurophysiological nature of post-traumatic stress and how to help people and families who suffer from it. One evidence-based tool gaining rapid ground among clinicians is guided imagery—a practical resource that is portable, self-administered, user-friendly, inexpensive, scalable, and highly efficacious. This workshop reviews what mental health professionals have come to know about post-traumatic stress and why guided imagery is a best-practice approach for healing it. In addition to summarizing relevant clinical research, the workshop will:
- Discuss practical ways to introduce guided imagery into your practice to enhance your therapeutic work with individuals, couples, families and groups.
- Demonstrate several kinds of effective imagery.
- Offer practical dos and don’ts when applying this method of treatment.
You will also be introduced to other imagery-based techniques and examine special considerations when treating military-related stress.
